Deep drop fishing is a relatively new method of saltwater fishing. We decided to give it a try about two years ago. Our fishing is on the Gulf Coast of Alabama in the US. We live near the coast..in fact I live on a river that is just minutes away from Mobile Bay and about a 20 minute ride to the Gulf of Mexico. I have been fishing the Gulf since I was a kid 58 years ago. I really did not start at birth but it was soon thereafter. My father and I fished the Gulf regularly from the 70′s on. We bottom fished most of the time. We were restricted to depths of 240 foot and less. Any deeper than that was impractical due to the effort it took to reel from depths greater than that. It does not take too many times of reeling up a fishing weight manually to convince you that 240 is a deep as you want to go.
With the electric reels that are now available you can easily fish to depths of 1000 foot and more. I always wanted to fish to greater depths. The few times we tried it before electric reels we had great success. Tile fish, Grouper, Scamp and fish we had never seen before were caught. About three years ago I started investigating what it would take to get my boat ready for serious hard core deep drop fishing. Electric reels were a mystery. How big of one would I need? What type of line? What style rod? I started reading and talking to anyone that I suspected might have some information that I needed. One great new source of info I found was the internet. Typing “deep drop fishing” into Google lead to a lot of sites but little usable info.
